I understand why many vegans are impotent, but why do so many suffer premature hair loss as well?

nice guy asked:

I recently attended a vegan educational conference in Saratoga in my never ending quest to understand this very odd breed. Two of the most hotly debated health issues as a result of being vegan were not surprisingly impotence and premature hair loss. The consensus regarding the impotence was that the abnormally low testosterone levels as a result of the vegan diet were the culprit. That makes sense, it’s kind of hard to rev up the engine when you don’t have any gas in the tank. But the hair loss was another story. Many thought it was due to a lack of complete protiens in the diet, but there was no real consensus. I’ll tell you, theres nothing sadder than spending an afternoon with a bunch of impotent balding vegans. It truly amazed me that all these vegan men are willing to walk this earth with limp noodles and shiny heads for the sake of there vegan convictions. You have to take your hat off to them. Come to think of it, many of them were wearing hats…
……What do you think may be causing this premature hair loss?
EDIT Thanks R H. Of course there are many causes of impotence. But you seem to have gotten off track…. We were discussing vegan impotence and hair loss, which are two of the many potential side effects of the vegan diet. At the conference, a full 28.3 % suffered from ED, and the average age of those at the conference was only 33.4 years. So it’s a real issue for many vegans. The rate of premature hair loss was even higher, as an astounding 43.7 %. Let’s try not to get off topic, but thanks for your well thought contribution.
EDIT Thanks BlackByrus The poll regarding impotence was done anonomysly.
HADE You could not be more incorrect. Your diet plays a huge role in maintaining normal hormonal levels. Pehaps it is you that should read up and educate yourself regarding this matter

EDIT ADKNAM Thanks for the insight. The B vitamins were discussed at the conference as well, they may be the culprit, I think they do play a role. ALso, I don’t think it is the lack of protien, but rather the lack of “complete protiens” that is a major contributor to the premature hair loss seen in so many vegans.
EDIT CONNIE Thanks for your insight. But I think what you may have experienced with vegans is perhaps out of the ordinary, an exception to the rule shall we say. With regard to your personal comments, please quit flirting with me, as I am a happily married man. However, if you must have further insight regarding myself feel free to email me if you would like to chat. Cheers Sweetie!
EDIT MEAT IS MURDER Just love that screen name, I’ll bet your the life of the party. For the record, I AM A VEGETARIAN.
EDIT ABEL H I am not making allegations. These are statements of fact. Please try at least a bit next time you make a post to make a contribution to the dialogue that other vegans find useful. I’m quite certain that no one found anything the least bit helpful in your post.
EDIT AL L In a word, you are “wrong” on both subjects. Obviously you were not paying attention, as this post was regarding “VEGANS”, not vegetarians.
EDIT CATKIN Thanks for your insight. I’ll email you the requested info. Let me know if you have any questions. I be posting some more info. regarding the conference when I have more time. You may want to put me as a contact so you will be sure not to miss it. Some of the information I gathered at the conference was remarkable, and really shed a lot of light on the vegan lifestyle and health consequences.
EDIT CATKIN I was going to email you the requested data but you do not have an email link in your profile. Send me an email if you still want the info.
EDIT MOONBLOSS Please email me if you would like to discuss this further.

    Sorry, no correlation there!

As if being obese didn’t make it difficult enough to have a fulfilling sex life! In a recent report by the Erectile Dysfunction Institute and the American Urological Association, overweight men are much more likely to fall victim to impotence. According to the report, a man with a 42-inch waistline is nearly twice as likely to fall victim to impotence as a man with a 32-inch waistline.

But there is good news! A healthy vegan diet promotes a fit and slim figure. It is estimated that only about 2 percent of American vegans are clinically obese compared to 18 percent of meat-eating Americans. Obesity causes much more than your middle section to go soft. This is yet another excellent reason to go vegan and slim down. Learn more about how meat and dairy products make you fat.

It’s not just clogged arteries and obesity that you have to worry about. A diet heavy in meat and dairy products contributes to the development of diabetes, which in turn can cause impotence. Between 35 and 50 percent of men with diabetes experience impotence. A healthy lifestyle is the absolute best way to ward off diabetes and prevent impotence.

And if your obesity leads to diabetes, as it often does, the Joslin Diabetes Center at Harvard University reports, “Diabetes can cause nerve and artery damage in the genital area, disrupting the blood flow necessary for an erection.”

So, what was the name of this vegan educational conference?

I’m trying to imagine a bunch of men discussing their impotence and balding: “Why yes Jones, I have a disfunctional wang as well! I do believe it must be my exceptionally low testosterone!” I can’t imagine any group saying this, vegan or not.

And lastly, and purely anecdotal, if veganism caused impotence, I would get a lot more sleep at night.

VEGANS DO NOT CONSUME ANY PROTEIN IN THEIR DIET(MEAT, EGGS, ETC.) . PROTEIN HELPS YOU GROW HAIR AND WITHOUT ANY IN THEIR DIETS THAT IS WHAT CAUSING THE PREMATURE BALDING.

Are you for sure you are at the right conference? Or in other words, is this for real?

I have never, in all my years of reading veggie magazines, websites and books, have ever come across a statement such as this…

All the vegan males I know do not have this problem, so this comes at a complete surprise to me…

How does eating flesh give you more testosterone? It may make you feel manly that you went to the grocery store and hunted down some processed turkey ,but in reality it does not.

And vegans do consume protein, just not excessively so as many meat eaters do.

I dont know who told you all this nonsense. Testosteron has nothing to do with your food !!!!!
If you are vegetarian you have to know what you are eating, have to eat and how to have enough vitamine B12.. t least they know what to do in Europe. PLS read some good medical books about vegetarian food

Erectile dysfunction and impotence are probably due to lack of B-complex vitamins, especially B-12.

Premature hair loss may be from lack of protein. It could also be due to stress from trying to “prove” the validity of being vegan.

    Saratoga – where, Skidmore?

Sorry .. I can say without hesitation that your statistics are way off ! … I won’t bother giving you the actual documentation but I would just rather tell you from experience that Vegan men not only have plenty of hair , but let’s just say when it comes to being quite functional .. there engines roar all the way cross country and back .. !

Vegan men are not impotent. I think all that meat you’ve been eating has been messing with your brain. My boyfriend has never had that much of a problem with E.D. and he’s been eating a vegan diet for almost five years.

78 percent of the 4000 people polled had this to say.. Anyone can make up a bunch of percentages to prove any old piece of ignorance….. You are weak minded.. You denigrate a lifestyle your puny mind can’t even fathom..Where, when, and what was the name of this alleged conference?.. I would like to contact the organizer to confirm your allegation..

I find it very hard to believe you attended a conference to discus this. As a matter of fact I think I remember you from a few weeks ago saying you get bored at work and like to stir up vegans and vegetarians. It’s pretty lame that you would make up scientific jargon to convince people that their diet isn’t healthy and to try and get an uprise out of people. What you eat has nothing to do with testoserone levels. Those are produced naturally by the body. As for hair loss, I have been a vegetarian for 5 years and I have a very full head of hair. Hair loss has to do with how you take care of your hair and your genetics not what you eat. Get a life and stop coming into this forum unless you have something serious to say.

bah im just kidding :) i got a full head of hair and am assuming it will stay like that for my life considering my good health

I can see how a vegan could go bald ripping their hair out after listening to stupid questions like this one on a regular basis.

-btw if you are going to continue posting these silly made up commentaries please consider new material. Its been a little redundant as of late. Fish and hair loss? Bored now!

Hmmm, I’ve been veg for 20 years, have read a *lot* of pro & con about meat-free diets but have NEVER heard this before. In fact, I’ve heard the opposite on various occasions– the impotance rate for vegetarians is about 25% of what it is for flesh-eaters, and one cause for this is that plaque deposits *anywhere* in the body will impede blood flow (you probably are aware of the relationship between eating animal products & cardiovascular disease). Most meat-eaters in this country consume muscle tissue & the occasional organ, it’s not like they’re gulping down “prairie oysters.” Any vegetarian or vegan who is @ all sensible about what he or she eats is getting ample protein & most vegans know to supplement with B12. Also, my SO doesn’t eat flesh & I’m *not* complaining ;-)
Seriously, I would really be interested in learning about what sort of references had been used for your data. Also, I would love to know who funded this “vegan educational conference” which smacks of Beef Industry propaganda.

This has never been my experience, so much so that I’m having trouble working out whether you are joking. Perhaps a trolling anti-vegan?

Bald, impotent and vegan doesn’t quite follow on with the stereotypical idea of the longhaired, sandal wearing, free love gettin-and-givin vegan hippie now, does it?

If this conference did in fact exist, sounds to me like the precise thing the Dairy and Beef Boys would stage.

Veganism = nutrient deficiency, apparently. We know deficiencies cause us stunted intellectual functioning. Well then, Da Vinci was veg, brilliant, and his self-portrait pictures him with a long flowing mane.

    I think there’s a real possibility you’re stirring here.

Why do you have a quest to understand? I’m interested to know.

I’ve never heard of such a thing. My vegan boyfriend (45) has a full head of hair and no problems otherwise. By the way, I’m not sure where you are getting your info but hair loss is associated with HIGH testosterone levels not low ones. Look it up.
