Is Propecia safe? Are there any side effects?

I’m 26 and I started to lose my hair about four years ago, I started taking Propecia about two years ago and it’s under control now. But my dad and other people say that it causes a lot of weird stuff, from impotence to breast growth, passing through some more colorful scenarios like testicle overgrowth and prostate cancer. The official information denies all rumors, but I need an opinion from someone objective.

I’m 48 and have been taking propecia for 8 years. No impotence. No prostate cancer. Testicles just the same. Hair stayin put. I would put more faith in what the drug companies say than rumors.
After I first started propecia my pharmacist (who I know personally) asked me if it was working well. He is going bald too. He is somewhat younger than me and was not through having children. He said he was interested in taking propecia but since he wasn’t through having children he wasn’t sure whether to start or not. Not really sure what he meant by that. You might talk to your pharmacist and ask him if propecia may interfere temporarily with fertility?
Anyway, working well for me all these years and I sure don’t plan to stop takin it.
Oh yeah boobs the same too. I think where all the confusion comes from is that many mistakenly think that propecia acts like estrogen (female hormone). What it actually does is block the breakdown of testosterone (male hormone) into dihydrotestosterone. Since dihydrotestosterone is what causes the baldness it prevents hair loss but doesn’t interfere with the male causing characteristics of testosterone.
