Your cat will be fine in surgery as long as the vet does a complete blood chemistry check and blood count. These tests will show if there are any problems with putting the cat under anesthesia. Also most vets montior the animals while under as well. Ask your vet if they have a blood pressure montior, heart rate montiors and other machines. Also ask what anesthetic gas they use, Sevoflurane is a better gas than Isoflurane.
Your vet is right about neutering him, it will prevent many problems in the future.

it might be. i mean the surgery alone could cause problems for the poor cat. but my cat lived to be 19 so you may have a couple more years with your cat so maybe ask around to see what other vets think.

Anytime any aged cat goes under anesthesia there is a risk. It is true that neutering can prevent prostate, but does it really make sense at this stage. Cats generally live up to 20 years, so with the surgery you could get 8+ healthy years. However, he might never develop prostate problems, so it’s really up to you. it all depends on the situation.. my vet told me that the older my cat was when i had her spayed (she was 5) the worse off it is… it really depends if you want him to live longer than 3 or 4 years… unless you know for sure whether prostate problems run in the history of your cat, i personally would hold off… but that’s just me!
