It is believe that prostate enlargement also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is caused by hormone imbalance. Men produce female sex hormones as well as male sex hormones. When there is a fall in the level of male hormones including testosterone, it results in an increased level of female hormones including estrogen, prolactin, Luteinizing hormone (LH) and Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Also in the case of the dominance of an especially potent form of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which causes prostate cells to multiply excessively thus result in enlargment - four to six times the normal amount of DHT is found in most enlarged prostates. While DHT increases with age, environmental factors are also responsible for this hormone accumulating in the prostate.

There is some evidence to suggest that the relative increase in circulating estrogen may strengthen the effect of DHT, which promotes cell growth in the prostate gland and is formed when testosterone is acted upon by a specific enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. As a consequence of estrogen and DHT acting together, cell growth and glandular enlargement are promoted.

Because prostate enlargement is as a result of hormone imbalance, it can be regulated with the use of diet and supplements. It is advised that for the sake of their prostate, men should include in their diet foods rich in zinc and also take zinc supplements. It should be noted that no one should exceed 100mg of zinc supplement per day.

Foods high in zinc are dulse, egg, fish, kelp, legumes, lima beans, liver, meats, mushrooms, pecans, oysters, pumpkin seeds, seafoods, sunflower seeds, whole grains, wild yam and parsley.

There are herbs recommended for this condition. These include saw palmetto, pygeum and Nettle leaves among others. A doctor I am acquainted with, Dr. B. Daley, has been successfully treating patients with prostate problem using the supplements, Male Balance, Cold RX (of which two of it main ingredients are zinc and vitamin C) and Genesis. An acquaintance of mine whose brother had prostate problem told me that his brother was relieved of its symptoms with the use of the above mentioned supplements. I know of other men who maintain the use of Male balance ever since they have been helped by it to resolve the symptoms of prostate problem. Incidentally among the many herbal content of the Male Balance, saw palmetto, pygeum and zinc are also included. You may read more about the above mentioned supplements on the product page of

Lay off masturbation/sex, caffeine and alcohol for a while. Drink a lot of water. Pee whenever you can even if its just a little bit. (But don't force or strain to go.)
